Find the Current
Coalition is not consensus.
A framework from The Reinventor’s Mindset™ by Ashton Jones

What is Find the Current?

This is the fourth framework inside The Reinventor’s Mindset and the first in Part Two: Reading the Current, which focuses on transforming systems rather than self.

Most leaders trying to drive change inside organisations make the same mistake: they try to convince everyone. They build the business case, socialise the idea, present to committee after committee, and burn out pushing against resistance.

But you can’t push water. You find where it’s already moving.

Inside most organisations, people have already been pushing for the change you want. They’ve written memos that went nowhere. They’ve raised hands in town halls. They quietly gave up hoping anyone would listen. These people are your coalition. They don’t need convincing. They need a signal that it’s time to move.

The Insight

You can’t push water - you find where it’s already moving. Find the willing, give them a signal.

The Coalition Map

Any organisation divides into three groups: the willing (already believers), the middle (persuadable but waiting), and the resistant (actively opposed or structurally blocked). Your job isn’t to convince the resistant. It’s to activate the willing and let momentum convert the middle. Energy spent fighting resisters is energy stolen from activating allies.

The Question

“Who’s already been pushing and given up?”

Why it matters?

Your coalition is already there. They need a signal, not a business case.

How do you apply Find the Current?

Map your coalition. Who’s already been pushing for this and given up? Who wrote the memo that went nowhere? Start there. One conversation with a willing ally creates more momentum than ten presentations to a sceptical committee.

FAQ

01.

How is Find the Current different from stakeholder management?

Stakeholder management tries to move everyone. Find the Current accepts that you can’t, and focuses energy on those already moving. It’s the difference between pushing water and finding where it’s already flowing. One exhausts you. The other carries you.

02.

What if there is no existing coalition?

There almost always is. If you truly can’t find anyone who’s been pushing for this change, that’s a signal worth listening to. Either the organisation genuinely isn’t ready, or you haven’t looked in the right places. Look harder before you push harder.

Transformation is a learnable skill, not a personality trait. I build new things inside systems designed to stay the same – and I teach others to do the same.
