Cold Clarifies
Difficulty is the teacher.

A framework from The Reinventor’s Mindset™ by Ashton Jones

What is Cold Clarifies?

This is the third framework inside The Reinventor’s Mindset. It teaches that difficulty isn’t the obstacle to transformation - it is the transformation.

The Latin phrase
per angusta ad augusta - through difficulty to greatness - captures it. When you deliberately face the hardest, most important thing first, everything else becomes easier. Not because the other things changed, but because you did.

Most people delay the hard thing. They check email, scroll feeds, handle admin, and tell themselves they’ll get to the real work after. Do it first. The cold wakes you up - physically and mentally.

The Insight

Do the hardest, most important thing first. The keystone habit unlocks everything else.

The Keystone Habit Stack

A keystone habit isn’t the most important habit. It’s the habit that makes other habits possible. When you do it, everything else flows. When you skip it, the day unravels. One foundational action - placed first in the day - creates momentum that compounds through every subsequent decision.

The Question

“What makes everything else easier?”

Why does it matter?

Most people delay the hard thing. Do it first.

They check email, scroll feeds, handle admin, and tell themselves they’ll get to the real work after. The cold wakes you up - physically and mentally.

Rise early. Do the most important thing first. Own your morning. The habit compounds.

How do you apply Cold Clarifies?

Map your first 90 minutes tomorrow. Identify the one hard, high-leverage action that would set the tone for the entire day. Do it before anything else. Before email. Before admin. Before the easy wins that feel productive but aren’t.

Frameworks for transformation

FAQ

01.

Does Cold Clarifies literally mean cold water swimming?

Cold water is the metaphor, but the principle is universal. The “cold” is whatever difficult thing you’re avoiding. For some people that’s a hard conversation. For others it’s writing, exercise, or making a decision they’ve been deferring. Do that thing first, and watch everything else get easier.

02.

How does this relate to the other frameworks in The Reinventor’s Mindset?

Cold Clarifies is the third of nine frameworks, sitting in Part One: Learning to Float. The first three frameworks focus on self-transformation. Part Two (Find the Current, Pay the Price, Radical Ideas Demand Speed) addresses system transformation. Part Three (Prune the Tree,
Lessons Live in the Landing, Keep Treading Water) covers sustaining both.

Transformation is a learnable skill, not a personality trait. I build new things inside systems designed to stay the same – and I teach others to do the same.
